Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation has finally burst onto our big screens and we, like the rest of the world, have gone Gatsby crazy! If you’re a fan of bygone eras and want to add some vintage glamour to your big day, why not embrace 1920s styling?
The decade was characterised by opulence and glitz, so ideally your wedding should be the same. Picture a ballroom with dramatic chandeliers and tables adorned with genuine silver cutlery, crystal glasses, candles, masses of white blooms, fine food and flowing Champagne – with live jazz in the background, of course. Perfect colours include the precious metal hues of silver and gold, as well as white and black. Mint green is a must if you’re including art deco elements (a favourite look of ours; click here for a fabulous DIY art deco wedding theme).
On wedding dresses, seek out elegant beading, soft cowls, feathers, fringing and lace. Sparkly jewels are a must; pearls too. Dress your man in a tuxedo for a smart, sophisticated look, or let him don a light-hued suit with waistcoat and bowtie for less formal elegance. As for your bridesmaids, drop-waist flapper dresses (and gloves) lead the way!
Of course the 1920s look also lends itself to more relaxed celebrations – particularly those with a shabby chic vibe. Think barns, bales of hay, lace tablecloths, silverware and crochet!
