For some that first dance is a given – a “predestined” song that has special meaning for you as a couple. For others though, it’s a lot more complicated. Take the couples who do have a favourite song … that’s almost impossible to dance to (if you want to do anything more than a high school shuffle that is), those who don’t have a special song, and those bewildered by all those fabulous options out there.
Start by narrowing it down to a type of music that you both like. Whether or not you share the same taste in music, you will most likely be able to find one genre that works for both of you. A second step is to find songs that are actually danceable – you’ll need to decide here whether you are going to do more than shuffle and sway – come on, it’s your wedding! – and if you’re thinking dance lessons, get started on them as soon as you can. If, like many couples, you find yourselves overawed by a long list of fabulous songs, now’s the time to decide what has special meaning for the two of you. Do the words tell a story – your story? Does your wedding have a special theme? Whatever it is that makes your relationship special, there’s a song that speaks of it.
Some couples come up short when they find that while the words of their song are perfect, the rhythm doesn’t do it on the dance floor. This is where Google can save the day – listen to all the versions you can find – often different cover versions are created in different beats. For those who still don’t find the beat they’re looking for, and are set on a certain song, it’s worth asking the band or DJ whether they can prepare a customised version for your occasion.
Some couples can think of nothing worse than doing the waltz to an overused love song. If this is you, that’s fine too. Don’t be afraid to be unconventional. Whether you choose schmooze, romance, sex appeal or humour, the first dance is really about works for the two of you.
