Fabulously romantic and oh-so alluring, the history of the veil is itself veiled in time, but its star roles have included symbolising the bride’s virtue, concealing her in arranged marriages, sheltering her from the elements and warding off and confusing any lurking evil spirits or would-be kidnappers. (Until Victorian times the bridesmaids wore veils too, to further outwit evil-doers!) Nowadays anything goes: everything from flowers and feathers to tiaras, hats, coloured hair, bows and even bunny ears can take the place of a veil. But there are still many gorgeous ways – with veil – to add allure to that special dress. Options include everything from the short versatile birdcage to one long enough for a cathedral. Pop and vintage are making a comeback; and this is also a good place to add a splash of colour – try this season’s radiant orchid, chartreuse or silver grey. Bear in mind that your veil needs to work with your hairstyle as well as your dress (make sure it doesn’t hide the most beautiful parts of your frock).
