Let’s face it, a traditional wedding format can present a few quiet moments. For those who don’t want a lull in proceedings – and want a wedding that becomes the talk of the town – here are some ideas to ensure yours isn’t a snooze-fest.
• Try an interactive wine, whisky, craft beer or liqueur tasting bar – where guests get to sample different flavours (and learn a little from an expert too) before they settle on what they’d like to sip.
• Hire a dance instructor to teach your guests an easy dance they can do together. They can learn it while you’re off having your pics done and put to practice later on the dance floor. Make it extra fun by tying it into your ethnic background or theme – be that a gumboot dance, the Highland fling or an East Coast swing.
• Get a magician to entertain your guests a la Dynamo, stealing a watch here and a sock there or go a step further with a tarot card reader or fortune teller – your guests will talk about it for hours.
• Have a favourite celebrity? Hire an impersonator to liven up the cocktail hour by performing, mingling with guests and posing for photos with them – think Elvis or someone equally legendary.
• Get acrobats or dancers to wow guests while they are eating – be it with the salsa, the belly dance or the trapeze.
• Hire a cigar roller to hand-roll a custom blend of tobacco just for your guests. (The guys will love the macho touch!)
• Burn CDs of the songs you’ll be playing at your party and give each guest a copy on parting. Guests can replay the musical memories for years.
• Offer a specialty after-dinner coffee bar, complete with baristas. Delicious toppings, like chocolate shavings and cinnamon add to the fun.
